Lean and Green Supply Chains

May 5th, 2009

The new administration has taken the lead in acknowledging the importance of creating business and living environments that take into account environmental issues. In fact, there are few organizations that have not embraced - at least in labelling- the concept of green and sustainable business practices. That takes care of the key activities that take place at the ‘node level’ - what I have coined the vertical functions that take place across the extended supply chain environment. What is now needed is a committed effort to create ‘lean and green’ linkages between all of the extended entities that collectively provide the supply chain infrastructure that literally feeds a global economy. A first step on this path is to acknowledge that there is a PROBLEM - and that the SOLUTION is in the hands of all of us who work in the logistics linkages in supply chain networks. Even tiny actions make a difference - things like identifying ‘non value added’ activities - things we have done out of habit over the years - even though we are not really sure why we do them! Printing out reports that act as door stops, wasting energy in millions of little ways - these are all things we can and should question - focus on the desired outcome versus the activity.

The following is a conference that addresses some of the issues at the ‘NODE’ level - I urge you to review some of the concepts expressed and think about how these translate into the links that you personally control.

Green Cities Florida. This green business conference (May 19-21, Orlando) gives practical, non-preachy guidance on ways to incorporate sustainable practices into businesses, governments and communities. Green Cities also presents ideas, products and services that facilitate the shift to sustainable practices. Topics that are addressed include clean technology, green building, organic agriculture, green investments, fair trade, the sustainable supply chain and integrating sustainability into corporate culture

GREEN is not only my favorite color - it is the color of MONEY!
